How to Clean Spilled Liquids from Carpet

Living Room

What's in the article?

Whether you're having guests over or just enjoying a nice meal with your family, nothing pulls a room together like a nice carpet, but it can easily be ruined by a spilled drink. It might seem hard to get these stains out of carpet fibers without a carpet stain remover or a professional carpet cleaner, but there are a few things you can try out.

How to Clean Coffee Stain from Carpet

All it takes is a moment of distraction to lead to a coffee spill. Coffee stains are one of the most common kinds of stains to land on a carpet, but they aren't that hard to remove. With a few household items and ingredients, you can easily clean coffee stains right up.

Here's how to remove coffee stains from carpet without stain removers:

Step 1: Blot, Blot, Blot

When faced with fresh coffee stains, the first thing you want to do is blot away as much liquid as you can with a clean cloth or a paper towel. This is an integral step to remove fresh coffee stains and stop them from becoming permanent.

Step 2: Make Your Cleaning Solution

To get coffee stains out, you can easily make one by mixing together 1/2 teaspoon of liquid dish soap, 1/2 teaspoon of white vinegar, and 2 cups of warm water in a spray bottle.

Step 3: Spray the Stain

With your white vinegar and dish soap solution, spray a clean cloth until it's damp and use the cloth to sponge and blot at the stain. Make sure to always keep the cloth damp with your solution and keep blotting until the coffee stains are gone before letting your carpet air dry.

How to Clean Wine Stains Out of Carpet

After a long and exhausting day at work, nothing sounds as good as a glass of red wine to help you relax and unwind, but a simple accident could lead that glass of red wine crashing onto your carpet. You might worry about leaving stubborn stains, especially if your carpet is made of white cloth, but here's a quick trick you can try to clean up that stained area.

Step 1: Blot, Blot, Blot

As mentioned, to avoid stubborn stains later on, it's best to blot the stain as much as you can with a dry towel or some paper towels. This will help prevent the stain from soaking into the carpet fibers, especially if you have a white carpet.

Step 2: Make Your Cleaning Solution

Similarly when tackling coffee spills, you can make an easy cleaning solution with white vinegar and dish soap. Just add a tablespoon of liquid dish soap, a tablespoon of white vinegar, and 2 cups of warm water into a spray bottle.

Step 3: Spray the Stain

With your cleaning solution and a dry white cloth, spray the stain until it's damp and use your cloth to blot the stain. Repeat this as much as needed until the stain disappears then blot dry.

How to Get Soda Stains Out of Carpet

Everyone loves a glass of soda, but not when it lands on your carpet. Cleaning out spilled soda from your carpet isn't as hard as you think.

Step 1: Blot, Blot, Blot

As with most stains that end up on your carpet, you should always blot away as much as you can before it sets and dries up. This is especially true with soda because the sweet syrups in them can attract dirt and dust, making for a darker and harder to clean stain.

Step 2: Make Your Cleaning Solution

There are many cleaning solutions available, but this is one that you can make on your own. Just combine 1/4 teaspoon of laundry detergent and 1/2 cup of cold water in a cup or a bowl.

Step 3: Pour onto the Stain

Once you have your solution, pour it onto the stain and use a clean and dry cloth to blot the stained area. Leave the solution dry over the stain so that the enzymes in the laundry detergent can do most of the heavy-duty cleaning.

Step 4: Vacuum Area

After the solution has dried over the stain, vacuum the area thoroughly to remove any leftover bits and residue.

Step 5: Use a Stain Remover

Should there be any leftover traces of the soda stain, try using a carpet cleaner or a carpet stain remover. Simply follow the instructions printed at the back of the bottle.

Any leftover coloring can be removed by combining one part white vinegar to two parts of water with the similar steps above.
