How to Clean a Suede Sofa

Living Room

What's in the article?

Suede sofas are great furniture pieces because they make the room look more comfortable and luxurious at the same time, but the suede material of the sofa might make regular cleanings seem complicated. Suede has a reputation for being hard to clean, but it doesn’t have to be difficult to do with these simple and easy steps.

Before Cleaning

Before proceeding with any cleaning process, it’s important that you figure out what type of suede material is used for your soda as this will help you be more aware of the better ways to approach cleaning.

Type Meaning
Natural Suede Made of animal leader and has a fuzzier finish. Material is thin and made of leather that can either be porous dyed or undyed.
Microfiber Suede Made from polyester and nylon fibers that have been manufactured to resemble the feel of natural suede. The tightly woven fibers make it more resistant to various particles.

Another important thing to check is the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning method, which can be found in the care tag attached to the material.

Type Meaning
Code W The material can be cleaned using water-based cleaners.
Code S The material can be cleaned with solvent-based cleaners.
Code W-S The material can be cleaned with either a water-based or solvent-based cleaner
Code X The material should be cleaned with a vacuum or by a professional.

How to Clean Suede Sofa

Regular Cleaning

Regardless of what type of suede you have—natural, faux or microfiber—a good way to maintain its cleanliness is to vacuum it regularly. This helps remove the dust and dirt particles that would have otherwise accumulated and grown had they been left alone. Regular cleaning your sofa will also keep it looking better for longer.

Removing Stains

The golden rule when it comes to facing stains is that they should always be cleaned immediately. When dealing with any recent accident, you should dab away as much residue as possible with a dry cloth and gently scrape away all the solid particles with a plastic spoon or knife.

Cleaning Natural Suede with White Vinegar

Afterwards, begin mixing up your cleaning solution by getting a bucket or bowl of warm water and adding a few drops of white vinegar and mixing everything together. With a soft sponge with a non-abrasive side, dip it into the cleaning solution and squeeze out the excess liquid before lightly dabbing it on the stain.

Repeat this as many times as needed until the stain is completely removed, but make sure that you have a dry cloth ready to absorb any excess moisture off the sofa material. You don’t want to overly saturate the suede with the cleaning solution. After making sure that you’ve soaked up as much of the residue as possible, leave the material to dry completely.

Cleaning Natural or Microfiber Suede with Baking Soda

Another way to remove almost any stain from your suede sofa is by using baking soda. Simply get a bowl and mix together a small amount of baking soda and a few drops of water before stirring everything together to make a paste. You can choose to add a drop of liquid dish soap if you want something more effective for tougher stains.

When you have your paste, get a damp sponge and use this to spread the paste evenly over the stained area. Dab the area until the stain has been removed before getting a clean cloth to remove all the residue. Leave the suede sofa to dry completely.

Cleaning Microfiber Suede with Liquid Dish Soap and White Vinegar

Easily clean your microfiber suede couch by mixing up your own cleaning solution. In a bucket or bowl, combine ¼ cup of liquid dish soap and 4 cups of warm water. Mix everything together until you see a lot of bubbles forming. You can also add half a cup to a cup of white vinegar to give it an extra kick for more stubborn stains.

With a scrub brush, scoop up some of the bubbles and suds and begin gently brushing at the stained area. Make sure that you rinse your brush with some clean water as much as needed, and repeat these steps until the stain has been removed. When you can no longer see the stain, get a damp microfiber cloth and use this to wipe away the residue then leave to dry.
