How to Clean a Nespresso Machine

Kitchen

What's in the article?

A Nespresso machine is a must for any coffee lover as it makes a convenient single-cup brew without having to measure the beans to water ratio. The coffee machine automates your brew to the ideal temperature, ratio, and intensity. However, your Nespresso machine may build up grime and mineral stains over time due to regular use.

In this article, we'll show you two ways you can clean your Nespresso machine from the inside out, so you can keep brewing your favorite coffee pods without the musty odors from mold, and the gritty texture from mineral buildup that affects the taste of your coffee. Before starting the descaling process, always check your machine's manual as a guide.

Clean Your Nespresso Machine with Descaling Solution

From an espresso machine to the Nespresso Vertuo machine, there are many descaling solutions available in the market that will make the descaling process easier for any coffee aficionado! Here's how to clean your Nespresso coffee machine with a descaling solution:

What You'll Need

  • Commercial descaling solution
  • Cloth
  • Dish soap

Step 1: Read the Instructions

First, read the instructions of the descaling liquid properly, and take note of any important information that will help in the descaling process. Make sure your descaling solution is food-safe and non-toxic before you proceed. Different Nespresso machine models may have different descaling solutions, so be sure to purchase the one for your machine.

Step 2: Fill the Water Tank

Place your descaling solution into the water tank. Some solutions are concentrated, and contain citric acid, so you will have to add water to the tank if this is the case. If your descaling solution is ready-to-use, then you won't need to add anything else.

Step 3: Brew

Set your machine to descaling mode, and brew the solution. Catch the brew that comes out of the machine in a large container - you may need to remove the drip tray to fit the catch bin. Let the machine brew on its descaling mode until all the solution has been expelled by the machine.

Step 4: Rinse and Dry

Start the rinse cycles by adding water into the tank. Set the machine on its descaling mode, and rinse the machine 2 to 3 times to completely remove any remaining residue. Remove your machine from its descaling mode, and unplug it. Clean the exterior of your Nespresso machine with a cloth dampened with soapy water for a full top-to-bottom cleaning!

Descaling Nespresso with Vinegar

Descaling your Nespresso machine with a white vinegar solution or another acidic solution like citric acid or lemon juice is the DIY version of cleaning your coffee machine when a descaling solution is not accessible. This method is inexpensive, effective, and won't damage your coffee machine when done properly!

What You'll Need

  • White vinegar OR
  • Citric acid OR
  • Lemon juice
  • Baking soda
  • Fine, non-iodized salt
  • Dish soap
  • Damp cloth

Step 1: Fill the Water Tank

Fill the water tank with white vinegar. You may also use lemon juice or citric acid mixed in water - as long as the solution is food-safe and acidic, it should work to descale your Nespresso machine. Add salt. Fine, non-iodized salt will provide an extra scrubbing power, and gets rid of mold and mildew as well. Add the salt directly into the water tank of your coffee maker.

Add in your baking soda a bit at a time to prevent the solution from bubbling over. You will need to add around a fourth of a cup to half a cup of baking soda in the coffee machine. Baking soda will act as an abrasive that will both lift stains and scrub the internal parts of your coffee machine.

Step 2: Brew

Check if your machine has a descaling mode, which you can find by referencing the machine's manual. Clean your Nespresso machine by brewing the descaling solution. As the solution goes through the coffee machine, it cleans the pipes, and removes any dirt from the water tank all the way to the nozzle. Catch the brewed solution in a large container, and dump it out.

Step 3: Do Rinse Cycles

After the brew cycle, you will need to do rinse cycles to remove residue from the descaling solution. Simply add plain water into the water tank, and set your machine to its descaling mode. Rinse your coffee maker 2-3 times to completely remove any traces of the white vinegar solution. The brewed water should have no smell or taste of vinegar or lemon juice.

Step 4: Clean the Exterior

Clean the exterior of your Nespresso machine by taking a damp cloth, and adding a few drops of dish soap. Wipe through the entire exterior of the machine, and wash the drip tray, water reservoir, and other removable parts separately. Wipe the cord as well to remove any dirt while the unit is unplugged.

Step 5: Let Everything Dry

Let the machine and its parts dry completely before you piece the machine back together. Your Nespresso machine should now be ready to use for your next morning cup of coffee, or afternoon pick-me-up!
