How to Clean and Disinfect a Dish Brush

Kitchen

What's in the article?

Dish brushes are great for cleaning flat dishes like your dinner plates, cutlery and utensils, bowls, chopping boards and even frying pans as they help get rid of noticeable food chunks and remove food particles that could be lingering on your dishes.

And compared to other options for cleaning dishes like kitchen sponges or wash cloths, dish brushes' synthetic bristles shed moisture very quickly, making them the most hygienic as they're least likely to harbor bacteria or develop any offensive odors from caused by excess water, unlike dish cloths or kitchen sponges that tend to cling to moisture.

But as something that is often used to clean, it never really occurs to us that the scrubbing brush may need some cleaning of its own. Like many of the items we find in our kitchen, we should make it a habit to get our dish brushes cleaned regularly, but this shouldn't be too big of a hassle with scrub brushes.

Here's how you can clean your dish brushes at home!

How to Clean Dish Brush at Home with Dishwasher

If your dish brush doesn't have a wooden handle, the simplest solution is to clean your brush by throwing it in the dishwasher.

Step 1: Put the Scrub Brush in Dishwasher

Cleaning your dish brush doesn't have to be too complicated! Just put your brush on the top rack or the silverware holder of your dishwasher, making sure that the bristle end of the brush faces upward.

Step 2: Run the Cycle

After closing the door, simply run through a cleaning cycle in your dishwasher with heated drying. When the cycle has finished, take your newly cleaned and sanitized scrub brush out.

For those of you who own dish brushes with non-wooden handles, this quick and easy way of cleaning and sanitizing your brushes serves as another reason why dish brushes are more preferable to kitchen sponges or dish cloths. Apart from a shorter cleaning process, dish brushes also don't require disinfecting.

For those of you who have dish brushes with wooden handles, don't worry about it! White vinegar is a great alternative to cleaning your dish brush without damaging the wooden handle.

Here's how you can do it:

Step 1: Remove Food Particles

Before doing anything else, you should inspect your brush for any noticeable loose particles that could have gotten in between the bristles of your brush. You can do this by running your brush under some water until all the particles have been washed away.

Should you find any stubborn pieces, feel free to use a fork to dislodge and remove these.

Step 2: Soak Your Brush in Vinegar

After making sure that all the food particles have been washed off, prepare some distilled white vinegar in a cup or a bowl. Mix in a drop or two of dish soap mixed in and let the dish brush soak for at least an hour. This hour-long soak should be enough to let the distilled white vinegar and the dish soap do their work.

Step 3: Rinse with Warm Water

After you've finished soaking the brush, rinse it under some warm running water to get all the traces of vinegar out then shake off any excess water.

Step 4: Let the Brush Air Dry

Once you've made sure that the brush has been properly washed, let your dish brush dry either by laying it on a clean cloth or by hanging it on a hook.
