Room cleaning often takes up a huge chunk of your day, especially if your space is cluttered with trinkets, dirty clothing, and food wrappers. Just looking at the messy space can already make you feel tired from all the cleaning you have to do.

Thankfully, you don't have to be a professional organizer to clean your room quickly and efficiently. Take it one step at a time, and you'll be more organized, clean quicker, and get more done in a shorter amount of time than you're used to!

Our handy guide will help you through cleaning that messy bedroom without having to reschedule your day! Have more time and energy to do the things you love, while still maintaining a spotless, pristine bedroom.

What You’ll Need

  • Trash Bags
  • Laundry Basket

Clean Your Room Quickly, Efficiently and Thoroughly

The Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Start with the Trash

Start with the easiest task: disposing the trash in large plastic bags. You can quickly identify if an item is to be disposed of or not, and picking up the trash for disposal will clear up a portion of the mess, and get you moving to clean the rest of the room.

Step 2: Take the Dirty Clothes to the Laundry

Next, pick up the dirty clothes from the floor and the bed, and place them in the laundry basket. Segregate clean clothes from the dirty ones, and hang or fold clean clothes for storage in your closet. Take your laundry basket out of the room in the meantime.

Step 3: Work in Small Areas

Divide your room into small areas: the bedside table, your study or work table, your bed, the floor, the shelves, and the vanity. Determine which areas need a daily clean, and which can be cleaned periodically.

High areas, like light fixtures, picture frames, and top shelves, can be cleaned on a weekly basis, but high touch areas, like the light switches and tables, must be disinfected daily. Determine the frequency of having to clean these areas based on your personal lifestyle.

Step 5: Store Large Pieces First, Small Pieces Last

Smaller items tend to get lost in all the mess. Much like a Find-It page, the larger items are easier to find and store compared to smaller ones. Start sorting through the larger, more prominent items first to clear the area, before you move onto the smaller ones.

Step 6: Vacuum or Sweep the Floor

Once you've sorted and stored your belongings, it's time to work on the floors. Vacuum or sweep the entire floor to remove any dust or dirt on them, and use a mop to give the floor a good clean.

Step 7: Wipe Down Surfaces

Wipe down the surfaces like your bedside table, your table lamps, shelves, and other fixtures with a cloth dampened with all-purpose cleaner. Use a glass cleaner to bring the clarity back to your windows, and clean device screens as well.

Step 8: Fix Bedding

Lastly, replace your old bedding and covers with fresh ones to complete the space clean up. Use fresh sheets on the bed, and fill the air with a room spray if you want to have a fresh, clean scent around your space.

3 Tips for a Fast and Efficient Clean

1. Label Storage Boxes Beforehand

Labeling boxes before you start storing items in them will give you a sense of direction to where items should go, instead of working spontaneously and blindly. Have a storage box for each area of your room, and place specific labels on these boxes so you know exactly where your belongings should go.

Labeled boxes also make it easier for you to find items you need later on. Looking for your glittery eyeliner for a special night? Look through your makeup box. Can't figure out where you stored that spare cellphone charger? Check the box labeled 'electronics.' Labeling makes organization easier!

2. Have a To-Go Room Kit

Don't waste time gathering all the supplies you need, you'll be tired even before you start your chores! Instead, create a basket with all the items you need to keep your room clean: a roll of trash bags, cleaning solutions, soft cloths, and anything else you might need.

This way, you can just grab your room kit, and start with a deep clean! No more scrambling around looking for spare rags, and no more reading through disinfecting solutions looking for the right one - everything you need is right in your to-go kit!

3. Make a Checklist

Create a checklist of all the things you need to do as you clean your space, and print them out into a memo pad so you can have a convenient list as you go. A checklist makes it easier to follow your regular route, and will make cleaning much faster as well.

Stop jumping from task to task, never getting anything done. Start organizing your schedule as you organize your room! You'll find that you lose less energy, clean more efficiently, and work faster with a checklist than without.
