How to Declutter Your Kitchen

A well decluttered kitchen will change your space. For one, you'll be able to reach items and food that you need easier and quicker, and you'll be able to clear up some much-needed space as well. Here's how to declutter your kitchen in a step-by-step guide.

How to Declutter Kitchen: A Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Decide on an Arrangement

First, set up an arrangement of how you plan to organize your kitchen. Kitchen decluttering can be confusing, and creating a list can help you track your progress. Determine the space and appliances that you use the most - these will be placed within sight for convenient usage, while less-frequently used items will be stored further back.

Step 2: Work by Section

Even if your kitchen is small, the sheer number of appliances, dinnerware, and utensils can become a challenge. Breaking down the work into different sections of the kitchen can help you focus on one area at a time. Separate the sections by use and space.

Work on one kitchen cabinet or one drawer at a time, and keep in mind that you plan to clear out your countertop. These small goals will help make kitchen cleaning rewarding, and you'll be left with a clutter-free kitchen from top to bottom.

Step 3: Declutter Each Section

Now it's time to declutter. Remove all items and appliances from their locations, and place them on the countertop, or another area you're not using. Use large food storage containers to categorize the items until you can place them back into their storage areas.

Check and assess each kitchen item. Get rid of the items you no longer use, and keep only what you need. Chances are you have several small appliances that do the same thing, such as several coffee maker units. Keep one, and set the rest aside to store, toss out, or donate. Do the same for plastic containers, cooking utensils, and even kitchen cleaning supplies.

You'll save up on precious space, and eliminate awkward space. You don't need an avocado cutter when you have a paring knife anyway, so keeping one, and tossing the other will help you maintain a minimalist space.

Step 4: Clean Out Drawers and Cabinets

Clean the drawers and cabinets before placing the items back inside. Use an all-purpose cleaner to get rid of grime and dirt, and tackle stains with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Sanitize your kitchen drawers and cabinets with rubbing alcohol, a food-safe disinfectant, or stream disinfection.

Step 5: Arrange Large Items First

Arrange the large items first to get a feel of the space. These include cookware, juicers, microwaves, toasters, water bottles and pot lids that require more room than teaspoons do. You'll get to see how the arrangement of the section will look like when arranging the larger items first.

For food items, set up large containers, or maintain a food shelf by your pantry to make it easier to arrange the food. Food containers will also seal your food items, keeping in the freshness.

Step 6: Arrange Smaller Items

Work your way down, and arrange the smaller items, such as utensils, dish towels, mugs, cups, and more. Place seasonal dinnerware at the very back of the cabinets, making sure they are protected from dust and moisture. Your everyday items should be within arm's reach for easier handling.

Arrange food and pantry items by expiration date, placing items with closer expiration dates in front, and newly-bought items at the back. Do the same for your cupboards, pantry, and fridge to minimize food wastage. Arrange your tea station, if you have one, by the different drinks and mixes, and place mugs conveniently nearby.

Step 7: Get Rid of Unnecessary Items

Once you've stored all the necessary items that you use often, it's time to get rid of the items you no longer need. If you only need select appliances and cookware on a seasonal basis, such as muffin tins or cookie sheets that are used only around the holidays, then storing them in the attic can help remove visual clutter from your dream kitchen the rest of the year.

Other items, such as plastic containers with missing lids, should be tossed out or repurposed. Mismatched pieces, lone utensils, and incomplete dish sets that you no longer use should be stored away or donated. Keeping these items out of sight will make your life easier.

Tips on Keeping a Clean Kitchen

It is important to keep the entire kitchen clean as this is the area of the house where you cook and prepare food. A healthy kitchen provides healthy meals for the whole family, so it is a must to maintain the pristine clean of this space. Here's how:

  • Clean the kitchen daily by wiping down surfaces with a damp cloth, and a few drops of dish soap to break down grease.
  • Mop the kitchen floors daily to prevent stains from setting.
  • Deep clean the fridge every two weeks, and declutter your kitchen as often as you can to keep the kitchen clean.
  • Clean up spills as they happen.
  • Soak and wash burnt pans and pots before the stains set in.
