What's in the article?

Creating a clutter-free closet may sound like a chore as you need to take a day to decide the items that you're keeping, and segregating them from the ones you're giving away. A closet clean out doesn't have to be a hassle, especially when you've got a checklist that will help you make those decisions easily and quickly!

Whether you're an individual, or you're clearing out the closet for your kids, make some time to do this at least once a year. Even busy moms can find an hour or so each day to declutter their or their children's closets as you don't have to declutter everything in one go. The important factor is getting it done!

In this article, we'll show you the steps so you can declutter your space without making you feel overwhelmed. Download our free printables, and let us guide you through!

How to Declutter Your Closet

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Take some time out of your busy schedule and let's get to decluttering! You'll need a couple of materials before you start:

  • Garbage bags
  • Large boxes
  • Laundry basket
  • Cleaning solution and soft cloth
  • New closet liners
  • Market, tape, and memo pad

Step 2: Empty Out the Closet

Remove all the items from your closet onto your bedroom floor or bed. Take each item out a handful at a time, and lay them flat so they don't get creases. Remove shoes, bags, pants, dresses, and other items of clothing from your closet. Always remember: anything that can be organized should be organized.

Step 3: Decide and Segregate

Give yourself a closet tour, and decide whether to keep or discard each piece of clothing. The general rule is that if you haven't worn that item in over a year, chances are you won't consider wearing it in the future. Keep only what you know you will wear later on.

This goes without saying, but tattered or damaged clothes can be discarded, thrown away, or turned into rags instead. Don't keep it, promising yourself that you'll get to repairing it - you'll just forget about it! Get rid of any items that are no longer functional as well.

Step 4: Prepare the Closet

Since you've started decluttering, it is a good idea to clean and sanitize your decluttered closet as well. Replace the liner that goes around your closet, and use a bit or dish soap diluted in water to wipe the interior clean. Use a soft cloth to dry the closet, and do the same to the exterior and to plastic or wire hangers.

Change the lining of the shoe rack as well, as these may have gotten dirty over time. Spray a disinfectant around the closet, and let it fully dry before placing your clothes back inside. Make sure to wipe down the rack that holds up your hanged clothes as well, and drawers should have a new liner.

Step 5: Box Up Clothes

Neatly fold the clothes that you do not intend to keep, and place them in clean trash bags to protect them from dirt. Remove the air from the bags, and place them in a box for storage. Label each box with the contents using the marker and the notepad, and tape the memo right on the side of the box where you can see the label clearly.

Start to take the boxes out of the room for an easier time cleaning up. This will make you feel less overwhelmed with the amount of items in the room, and make it easier for you to organize the rest of your clothes.

Step 6: Fold and Hang

Fold or hang up the clothes you decide to wear in the future. Place folded clothes neatly in drawers, and shoes on the shoe rack. Take any piece that needs a good wash to the laundry room to clean it before placing it back with your collection.

Step 7: Donate, Thrift, or Hold a Yard Sale

For the clothes you do not intend to keep, discard the ones that are tattered and old, and donate, thrift, or sell the ones that are still in-style, usable, and can still be appreciated by someone else. This way, you can keep your fashion choices sustainable, while keeping up with the fast-paced trends!
