How to Clean a Shower Head: Different Cleaning Methods

Bathroom Cleaning Isn’t For Everyone

What's in the article?

Whether you enjoy cold showers or hot showers, you use the shower head every day to rid yourself of dirt, oils, and dead skin cells that are making you feel mucky. With the constant moisture trapped in the nozzles, your shower head is in threat of getting hard water stains, mineral deposits, mold, and grime.

You don’t take showers in muddy water, so why would you clean yourself with water coming from a moldy or greasy shower head? A dirty shower head can spread germs and spores to your skin, giving you allergies and illnesses. Grime can clog your shower head too, leading to uneven spraying.

How to Clean a Shower Head: Different Cleaning Methods

When cleaning your shower head, you can’t really get deep into the nozzles where water sprays. You can try to clean them out with toothpicks and wires, but those methods don’t give you a thorough cleaning, and they can take a lot of time and effort to do.

Shower heads get a lot of water and moisture loving organisms, stains, and deposits, so cleaning a shower head is essential in your bathroom upkeep. What’s the point of keeping the rest of your bathroom clean if the part that keeps you clean is unkept? However, the nozzles prove to be a bit of a challenge as they are notoriously difficult to clean.

Fortunately, you already have the best cleaning products that will effortlessly clean a shower head without much scrubbing or picking: vinegar. Baking soda works just as well, but for completely different reasons. Adding cleansers like hydrogen peroxide provides an extra cleaning power to baking soda. Follow our guide to clean out that slimy shower head:

How To Clean Shower Head With Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a cult favourite for homeowners everywhere. Made from apples that have fermented long enough for the sugars to turn into ethanol, then acetic acid, apple cider vinegar is hailed as a natural product that can be used in most cases. We’ve heard it being used in a plethora of cases, like in food, home remedies, skincare, and of course, cleaning.

To clean your shower head and nozzles with apple cider vinegar, simply take a small plastic bag that can fit your shower head, and fill with equal parts apple cider vinegar and water. Secure the plastic bag onto your shower head, making sure that all the nozzles are completely submerged in the diluted apple cider vinegar. Let the shower head sit in the solution overnight.

Overnight, the vinegar solution should loosen the dirt, kill mold, and dissolve hard water stains that have built up in your shower head. The next morning, you should find the bag filled with debris floating around the vinegar solution. Simply remove the bag, toss the bag away, and run the shower to rinse out the nozzles as well as any remaining vinegar and grime.

Helpful Tip: Apple cider vinegar is known to stain white tiles, marble, and wood, so use caution when using the ingredient around these surfaces.

How To Clean Shower Head With Baking Soda

Baking soda inhibits the growth of mold, provides a gentle abrasive cleaning power, and dissolves dirt and mineral deposits found in the shower head. Adding a cleanser like vinegar or hydrogen peroxide (just never add both together!) will help dissolve any hard minerals that have accumulated over time.

Remove the shower head by unscrewing the shaft from the water hose. Apply a paste made from baking soda and hydrogen peroxide directly onto the nozzles, making sure to cover every part of the shower head. Let the paste sit on the shower head until it dries, then take an old toothbrush or soft-bristled brush and scrub away the grime and dirt.

Rinse around the shower head under warm running water at moderate water pressure, and place the shower head back onto its stand. Let the water run to rinse out the nozzles. Repeat this process whenever necessary to ensure that mold and mineral deposits do not build up in your shower unit.

Helpful Tip: This baking soda and hydrogen peroxide paste can be used in a myriad of ways, including cleaning out grout, and removing stains. However, hydrogen peroxide can bleach coloured surfaces, so when in doubt, baking soda and water provides a safer option.

How To Clean Shower Head With Vinegar and Baking Soda

Distilled white vinegar cleans out grime and dissolves mineral deposits on its own, but adding baking soda to the mix gives you the best of both worlds. This famous duo makes a powerful cleaning solution that gets rid of all kinds of grime and grease that you would find in the nozzles of your shower head.

Fill a plastic bag with vinegar and baking soda, letting the mixture fizz. Secure the bag around the shower head with a rubber band, and let the mixture sit overnight. The next morning, take an old toothbrush and scrub out any stuck on dirt. Turn on the hot water to rinse out the nozzles. Make sure to repeat this cleaning process at least once a month.
